How To Work Your Window Air Conditioner — A Guide For Tenants [English & Spanish]

Operating Window/Wall Air Conditioners

Window and wall air conditioners are not the same as central air conditioners. To ensure you get the best performance from your A/C, we advise that you turn it on in the morning.

Your A/C has a thermostat that will detect the temperature in the room. When the unit reaches the temperature you set it to, it will shut off. When the room gets warmer the thermostat will detect that change and will turn on by itself.

The vent should be closed at all times and should only be open when using the fan mode, to bring in outside air. Having your vent open while operating the A/C will make your unit work harder and it will cost you more money to run.

When turning on your A/C, make sure you set it to 76 degrees and no lower than 72. This will not only will save you money, but it will allow your A/C to work properly.

Check your filter every other week for better performance. If you turn your A/C on when the day’s heat is at its peak, it will take time to get the desired cooling effect, and will use much more energy.

Following these easy instructions will save you money, and better performance from your A/C.

It’s Getting Hot, So We’re Getting More Cool!

By the looks of the thermostat, it’s getting hot again! Although I feel it, I’m happy to report, that I’m inside my office for most of the day.

Under my brand-new 9,000 BTU SoleusAir (Thank you!) 13 SEER Energy Star ductless mini-split air conditioner, heat pump, I might add!

Since the heats a-swirlin’, we’re bringing in another truckload of Airwell-Fedders room air conditioners.  These units will be able to slide into most manufacturer’s existing wall sleeves (cans), including GE, Carrier, Friedrich, and Fedders.  Although most older air conditioners being replaced today are 220V, some models that are 110V/115V need to be replaced.  So we’re bringing in some 10,000 BTU 110V/115V air conditioners that measure 24″ wide, 14 1/2″ tall, and under 22″ deep.

If you have a sleeve that’s larger than that, not to worry, these models come with trim-kits that slide over the front to make any replacement gaps unnoticeable.

These replacement air conditioners with solid-sides and rear-vents are our most popular items since many multifamily apartments replace these on a regular basis.

Please contact us if you have any questions, or purchase on our website here.

Cash For Clunkers is Done, Now How About Cash For Appliances?

Now that the cash-for-clunkers auto program is over, the government has set aside more than 300 million dollars for appliance rebates.

Feder’s Distributors has a huge selection of Energy Star appliances and air conditioners in-stock that can be delivered or picked-up within one business day.  If it isn’t in-stock, we can usually get it within a day or two for delivery within two or three business days.

Need Air Conditioner But Only Have A Sliding Window?

Want to stay cool, but you only have a sliding or casement window in your room?  Utilize it for a vertical air conditioner:

Vertical Air Conditioner
Vertical Air Conditioner

Many people don’t know that air conditioners are made for this purpose alone!  You’d be surprised at how often we hear a customer ask if they can turn a window air conditioner on its side!

Not A Vertical Window Air Conditioner
Not A Vertical Window Air Conditioner!

Slider/Casement air conditioners, as they’re called, work much better than a regular horizontal air conditioner for these types of windows.  If a regular horizontal air conditioner, made for a double-hung window is installed, a plywood or plexiglas feel would need to be fabricated above the air conditioner to fill the gap.

Although a bit more expensive than regular double-hung window air conditioners, some manufacturers do make them.  All vertical air conditioners measure 14½” wide by 20½” high and come in 5,000 BTUs to 15,000 BTUs  cooling only.

We currently have two 10,000 BTU models available that would cool a small living room or large upstairs bedroom off nicely.

Remember this and this?

What would you do to keep cool? Instead of rigging your own contraption, you can get air conditioners from us for less than $60.00* that would make a bedroom nice and cool!

What is a Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner?

Ductless air conditioners are called “mini-split” systems because they are similar to a regular ducted split central air conditioner, only on a smaller scale. A split system means that the compressor/condenser unit is located outdoors and “split” from the indoor cooling coils/blower. Just a small three-inch diameter hole is cut in the wall to run the tiny refrigerant lines and electric wires to the indoor cooling units.

With the compressor outdoors and an indoor cooling unit mounted high on a wall or ceiling, they are super-quiet (sounds like a “whoosh”). These units are typically even quieter than many ducted central air conditioners. In a central unit, huge amounts of air must wind through complex ducts with many bends and shape changes, all of which contribute to noise.

Mini-split ductless air-conditioners are a preferred option to trying to use several room air conditioners to cool an entire house. Window units may block the window.

Nowadays the efficiency ratings of ductless systems (SEER from 10 to 19) are as high or higher as the top-of-the-line central air conditioner (SEER up to 16), and they can still be more efficient than window, wall and even central units. Since mini splits have no ducts, they avoid the energy losses associated with ductwork of central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in a unconditioned space such as an attic.

Heat pump models are also available for keeping warm. If you hate that first shot of chilly air in the winter each time the furnace or heat pump blower starts, select a ductless model with a soft, slow start and a pre-heater for the air. For colder climates, some of the heat pump models also have backup electric resistance heat.

Ductless, mini split-system air-conditioners and heat pumps (mini splits) have numerous potential applications in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. The most common applications are in multifamily housing or as retrofit add-ons to houses with “non-ducted” heating systems, such as hydronic (hot water heat), radiant panels, and space heaters (wood, kerosene, propane).

They can also be a good choice for room additions and small apartments, where extending or installing distribution ductwork (for a central air-conditioner or heating systems) is not feasible. Applications in other types of buildings include: recording studios, school classrooms; perimeter cooling for office buildings; additional cooling for restaurant kitchens; and cooling for small offices within larger spaces, such as arenas, warehouses, and auditoriums.

The primary disadvantage of mini splits is their cost. Although, costs have decreased dramatically during the past few years, such systems can cost about $600-$2,000 per ton (12,000 Btu per hour) of cooling capacity. This is about 10% more than central systems (not including ductwork) and may cost twice as much as window units of similar capacity.

The installer must also correctly size each indoor unit and judge the best location for its installation. Oversized or incorrectly located air-handlers often result in short-cycling, which wastes energy and does not provide proper temperature or humidity control. Too large a system is also more expensive to buy and operate.

Small Window *OR WALL* Air Conditioners Available

We have almost a thousand 8,000 BTU and 10,000 BTU Goldstar air conditioners in stock!

These are hard-to-find window *or wall* air conditioners that come with a slide-out chassis for easy installation. Pricing on these units is amazing as you can see on our website. Just look for the Goldstar models WG8005R (8,000 BTU) or WG1005R (10,000 BTU) that mention the slide-out chassis in the description. You may not be aware that Goldstar is manufactured by LG (Lucky Goldstar sometimes referred to Life’s Good)!

Usually, you can find 8,000 or 10,000 BTU air conditioners for a lower price, but they do not come with a wall sleeve. If you plan to install a small air conditioner through your wall, make sure it comes with a sleeve and a slide-out chassis in case you need to service it or replace it in the future. You won’t want to break your wall to get it out!

By the way, if you’d like to install an air conditioner in a window (whether it be a double-hung window or a slider or casement window), we sell those cheaper than anyone else in the country too.

Please call us toll-free anytime during our normal business hours: 866-333-3770 or check our website.

If you do, in fact, see one for less, we will ALWAYS beat any competitors’ sale prices, so please contact us before you purchase from somewhere other than Feder’s Distributors!
